Immunophenotyping is a technique used to study the proteins that cells express. This technique is used in scientific research and clinical laboratory diagnostics. This can be done on blood, bone marrow, disaggregated tissue or cell suspension. It involves the labeling of cells with antibodies directed against proteins. The labeled cells are analyzed by a flow cytometer, a laser-based instrument capable of analyzing thousands of cells per second. The whole procedure can be performed in a few hours.
Apoptosis Analysis
Apoptosis analysis refers to the measurement of cells undergoing timed cell death, which can be measured by flow cytometry. It is especially useful as a measure of drug toxicity, death pathway activation by factors (Fas, TNF) and mixed lymphocyte reactions.
Functional Assays
Phagocytosis, protein expression, and formation of Hydrogen Peroxide in neutrophils are some examples of functional assays that can be measured by flow cytometry.
DNA Content Analysis
DNA content can be quickly measured using flow cytometry. The result is an accurate breakdown of cells which are in G0/G1, S-phase and G2/M. It also can determine whether there are "aneuploid" cells (with an abnormal amount of DNA) and if the aneuploid population is hypo- or hyper-diploid.
